How to: Dress down a little black dress

If you're anything like me, you've got a closet backed up with pretty dresses that you rarely get a chance to wear.  Well, I got tired of my little black dress just sitting there collecting dust, so I decided to take it for a spin during a casual day out.

Unlike wearing it for a fancy night out, your LBD should not act as the focus piece.  Instead, think of it as a backdrop.  The key then, is to bring a relaxed essence to the outfit that will offset the natural dressiness of the LBD.  I did that with a chambray blouse and by putting away the heels and switching them for wedged booties.  The final touch was accessories.  Bright pieces work great against the black canvas, striking a balance between conservativism and haphazard fun.
